Off-grid solar energy systems are not connected to the electrical grid. Unused power from your solar panels is stored in deep-cycle batteries so you have a reservoir of power to draw from at night or during stormy weather. While they require the extra expenses of deep-cycle batteries and a charge controller, off-grid systems are not affected by grid outages and offer true energy independence.
Grid-Tied PV System Quote
Grid-tied solar energy systems work in tandem with the electrical grid. You get electricity from your solar panels whenever they're producing, and draw power from the grid when they're not. Grid-tied systems are less expensive because they don't use batteries in most cases. This can make them vulnerable to grid outages, but some inverters allow your system to continue providing power during a blackout.
