This AC Coupling kit from OutBack Power extends a grid-tied solar PV system's functionality to connect to a battery bank and keep your critical loads powered during grid outages in a safe and code-compliant way. The kit utilizes an 8kW OutBack Power GS8048A inverter/charger featuring dual AC inputs so you can connect an AC generator to the system, and frequency shifting to reduce or disconnect AC current when your batteries are charged, protecting them from the hazards of overcharging.
During a power outage, when your grid-tie inverter shuts down but the sun is shining, the Radian GS8048A will use your solar panels to power the loads connected to your designated "critical loads" panel. Any excess PV power will be used to charge your batteries.
Note: The Radian GS8048A inverter is limited to a maximum input from the connected grid-tie inverter of 25A at 240VAC. This means your grid tie inverter should be smaller than 6kW to use this AC coupling solution by itself. However for larger grid-tie systems, up to three Radian inverters can be stacked in parallel.
