When you think about how vegetables or fruits grow, you probably think about a seed, right? While you're technically right, did you know there's another way to regrow some fruits and vegetables from the scraps when you're done eating it? As long as the scraps are fresh and you're giving it the right environment, you won't have to go the grocery store or buy seeds again! Check out these 8 fruits and vegetables that can be regrown, can start in the house, and are nontoxic for dogs and cats.

1. Basil

Even if you never cook with basil, you will enjoy the smell of this beautiful plant. The freshness of basil will welcome you every time you walk into the kitchen. If you do cook with it, then every time you regrow it, you could save a few dollars.

You can easily grow basil from the seed. Simply place the seeds in a bowl with plenty of drainage holes at the bottom, with enough room for growth and expansion. As far as watering, once or twice a week is sufficient, except when the temperature is rising in the spring and summer. Herbs are better to water in the morning so that they have all day to drain the excess water. Evening watering could lead to the development of the fungus in the basil. It is best to water it in the sink.

2. Ginger

Ginger is very easy to regrow; all you need to do is put a piece of ginger in soil with the youngest buds turned upwards. Leave the pot of ginger in a moderately sunny, warm, and humid place, and soon it will begin to grow new shoots and roots.

When you're ready for harvest, remove everything from the soil, take part of the bulb and plant it again, repeating the process. Ginger is also a beautiful house plant so you can enjoy it indoors too.

3. Avocado

Before planting, wash the avocado seed and then stick toothpicks into it, as this will hold it in the pot with water. The seeds should be submerged in the water (you should check on this every day). The container should be kept in a warm, moderately sunny spot.

It will take up to six weeks for the seed to root and begin to sprout. Before planting the roots, be sure to cut it a bit. When the leaves show up, it's ready for transplanting into the ground.

4. Celery

Change the water every few days. You will see how the plant blooms, even when the outer part begins to fade and discolor. Once the new celery grows, move the plant into the garden or a pot with soil so that it can continue to grow.

5. Cabbage

Cabbage is another plant you can regrow from the roots. Although cabbage can be regrown in water, shallow planting in the soil will be much more efficient. Make sure the soil stays damp for the first week or two in order to stimulate growth. However, don't wet the leaves. As far as lighting, cabbage likes direct sunlight for at least four to six hours a day.

6. Pineapple

Regrowing pineapple is a long process, but it can be done. Cut off the upper (leafy) part of the fruit and remove any part of the edible fruit section if there is any left (this is important to prevent decay). Carefully cut small horizontal parts of the upper leafy part until you see the buds – the small circles on the flat bottom of the stem. Remove several layers of the lower leaves, and put everything in a pot with water. After the roots show up, plant it in the soil and grow it in the usual way.

7. Potatoes

8. Scallions

If you think growing plants is not exactly for you because you can't grow anything, just give growing scallions a try. It's easy to grow, and it grows quickly.

Simply put the plant in a small flower pot and fill it with soil. Soak it with water, but don't overdo it. Place it near a window (but not in direct sunlight) and when it grows to about 10 inches, cut the stem and use it for cooking.
